CORNWALL CUP

2nd STRING NOT 2nd RATE

TRURO LADIES 2nds 5-0 CARADON 2nds

With the ladies 1st’s on the sideline in force to cheer them along, the ladies 2nd’s didn’t disappoint. As a non league side, the 2nd’s only play irregularly and as the only player with any real league experience, a lot was riding on Paula Cockles who was playing her first game for a year since returning from maternity.

As it transpired she was able to sit back in a holding role, distributing the ball out from deep as her team mates, who were mostly still at school, were more than able to dictate the course of the match. Right from the start the girls from Truro were showing great movement and passing, which lead to an early goal, when good link up between Chloe Doyle and Jo Murray handed a golden opportunity to Verity who gladly accepted.

Caradon realized that this was going to be a lot harder than anticipated, and did get a couple of attacks in but Miranda Burton and Jodie Cadwell did well to hold them off. They even had a hand in creating the 2nd goal after Caradon had over committed on attack, leaving them vulnerable to a quick counter which was what Vicki Cooke was happy to do making the score 2-0 to send Truro’s fans wild on the sidelines.

Truro were then gifted a corner, again Murray and Doyle showing great understanding to work this. This lead to another well deserved goal, which sent Truro into half time with a 3-0 lead.

It was looking bright for Truro who were already thinking ahead to the next round of the Cornwall Cup but in the 2nd half Caradon started to fight back but couldn’t break down a well organized and dogged defence, Cockles and Caroline Oakes being exceptional in leading by example.

A change in the forward line by off field Capt Anna Rogers, brought more goals. Mary, making her debut, Zoe Fitzergald and Cooke worked well together for the important 4th goal which killed off any of Caradons aspirations. The 5th goal was the icing on the cake, coming from a beautiful worked move that saw 7 or 8 passes before ending in the bottom corner of the goal.

Truro’s 2nd string showed that they were anything but 2nd rate with this impressive victory over an established league team. Their organization, commitment and fitness paid off, meaning they advance to the quarter finals of the Cornwall Cup where they’ll play Newquay.

FIRST GAME, FIRST WIN

St AUSTELL LADIES 2nd's 1 - 2 TRURO LADIES 2nd’s

Truro Ladies newly formed 2nd team travelled to Poltair School on Sunday for the first round of the Cornwall Plate and faced Trelawney 2's St Austell 2nds in their first ever competitive game.
The first 10 minutes saw Truro dominate the play with numerous attacks from the wings and some lovely crosses only to be denied by the St.Austell goal keeper who was in fine form. Suz and Laura kept the midfield solid and used the width in Olivia and Jasmine to Truro's advantage. From all the build up play, Truro eventually got the goal they deserved after 20 minutes with a lovely team effort.
After this goal, Truro seemed to let play slip a little with a few lazy passes, however, any counters St Austell made were easily recycled by our defence and especially Maid of the match, Miranda who had an outstanding game. Just before half time, Truro got caught out by pressing too high and despite some valiant last ditch defending, conceded a very messy goal to leave the scores level.

The second half started very much the same way as the first where Truro had all of the possession. Again Truro used the width of the pitch to their advantage, playing some very good hockey, which saw them launch a wave of attacks. The St Austell defence did very well to collect any stray passes and loose balls to deny the trio of attackers in Dani, Sophie Brewster and Olivia Ballard. Despite all this pressure, the St.Austell defence held out, denying Truro a clear win that the balance of play said they should have had, leaving the scores 1-1 at full time.

The game then moved into extra time, with Truro renewing their raids into the St.Austell area. The St.Austell keeper had kept her team in the game almost single-handedly and continued to frustrate the Truro forwards who were getting fed up with seeing shot after shot saved by her. Finally though, Truro had the right player in the right place at the right time, with the ball falling nicely after yet another save, which just needed a simple tap in to win the game. Truro 2nd’s now progress to the Plate quarter finals with a tough match against Penzance Ladies 1st’s, but for their first ever non friendly game, this was a very promising start.

Team: Jules (GK), Miranda, Stacie, Lorna, Vicky, Laura, Susan, Jasmine, Danni, Sophie, Olivia, Chelsea, and Lizzy.
